Clinical Story of My Daughter’s Child Allergy
Residing with a severe peanut intolerance
Linette Van Der Bacht has been afflicted with a severe peanut allergy since she was a child. Peanut consumption may result in fatality. What is the impact of this allergy on her daily life?
Linette opens the door, smiles behind her disguise, and leads us into the kitchen and dining room of her residence, which is situated on the outskirts of the historic town of Olten. In front of the window, she has cultivated a natural garden. Even in the kitchen, the products are primarily natural: the refrigerator is stocked with fresh, unprocessed foods, including fish and eggs. Packaged products are prohibited due to Linette’s severe allergy.
Prohibition of Packaged Products
Linette can experience severe reactions that can result in anaphylactic shock if a (packaged) product contains even residues of peanuts, in the absence of specific medical treatment. “You begin to experience an itching sensation in your throat, which is followed by the appearance of red spots on your face and difficulty breathing,” he elucidates. You are at risk of losing consciousness.
In the most severe cases, death.
Linette Van Der Bacht, a teen child medical student with a peanut issue, states, “My friends must verify whether there are peanuts on the counter before I join them for a drink at the bar.” Additionally, she asserts, “Medicines are more significant than cell phones.”
Lindette’s condition is classified as the seventh most severe on a scale of one to seven. For the time being, she has been fortunate enough to circumvent the most severe repercussions. She administers the medications that she consistently carries with her as soon as she experiences symptoms.
They are more significant to me than mobile phones,” she adds with a laughter.
At the age of three, she was diagnosed with a peanut problem in children. The diagnosis had completely disrupted the lives of all six members of her family. Other children had the option to purchase a milk roll or a chocolate bar during their excursions or outings. Nevertheless, Linette’s family was compelled to forfeit them due to the substantial likelihood that they contained peanut.
Lack of experience with abuse
Linette has never been the victim of discrimination, in contrast to other sufferers. According to a European study on peanut allergies, 77% of sufferers experience feelings of exclusion, and 43% have been harassed at least once in their lives.
Additionally, anxiety, tension, and frustration associated with food intake are present. Frequently, the individuals who are impacted are the custodians of allergic children and healthy parents. “My first boyfriend and I were given the nicknames Peanut and Nutcracker for amusement, rather than as a result of bullying,” Linette explains.
Linette enjoys consuming food.
She is not apprehensive when she is eating. “This is a common occurrence for me.”
The medical student, who partially pursued her education due to her allergy, adopts a philosophical perspective.I am accustomed to this.Nevertheless, it is challenging to envision the extent to which a severe allergy can disrupt one’s daily routine.
In order to kiss her, her companion must refrain from consuming peanuts the day prior. You can never be too cautious, as the allergens remain in the buccal cavity for “only” about four hours.
Kissing poses a risk.
Linette inquires with the production department in retail stores regarding whether the peanuts were packaged prior to the almonds. If this is the case, she relinquishes the hazelnuts. For instance, Linette is aware that she can consume bread from Migro’s establishment without risk.
She spends an extended amount of time purchasing in stores because she meticulously examines the ingredients list on the packaging to ensure that there are no traces of peanuts or other ingredients to which she is allergic. She refrains from placing products in her purchasing cart that are adjacent to unpackaged peanuts.
Linette disclosed her child allergy to her peers at the commencement of her academic career.
Danger everywhere
She avoids the danger of sitting next to an individual who consumes peanuts or M&Ms by watching movies that are about to be removed from the program, which reduces the number of people watching.
Linette relocates to an alternative carriage when a passenger adjacent to her consumes a Snickers or another peanut-containing bar while she is on the train.
She conducts a test on her wrist prior to applying lipstick.
She is a board member of the Verein Erdnussallergie & Anaphylaxis (the association for peanut and anaphylaxis, erdnussallergie.ch), where she shares her experience and knowledge of allergies with others. For individuals who have recently been diagnosed with an allergy, she serves as a point of contact. In what manner should I organize my day at this time? What requires my attention?Sophie is capable of providing expert responses to inquiries.
Linette’s peanut issue impacts her daily existence, but not her life as a whole. She engages in a variety of activities, including jogging, yoga, dancing, strength training, and rowing, in addition to socializing with her peers. She is particularly fond of the natural garden, where she can forget about her child’s allergy and be encircled by insects and flowering plants.
Claudia, 41 years of age
When I was eight years old, I received my initial asthma diagnosis. I had cats and rodents at home, and I was allergic to their fur, as well as to dust and certain foods.
I adhered to the prescribed remedies; however, my breathing deteriorated on a daily basis. During childhood, one gradually adjusts to the fact that this is not entirely accurate. I would administer a bronchodilator if the crisis was severe.
There appeared to be no alternative solutions.
I was hospitalized for a severe crisis when I was between the ages of 18 and 19 as a child juvenile. I recall the terror in my parents’ eyes; we had a very difficult period. The physicians prescribed an Allergy treatment that was to be taken in the morning and evening. However, the treatment did not produce any effects, and it did not last. As a result, my asthma continued to worsen over the years. I had come to the point where I was unable to speak and walk simultaneously, and I was plagued by a persistent wheeze that would not subside.
Therefore, I sought the advice of a pulmonologist.
The physician who attended to me promptly recognized the gravity of the situation; my lung capacity had been significantly diminished. She required me to enroll in a particular program that utilized a therapy to alleviate severe asthma. Ultimately, a shift occurred.
I now undergo biological therapy every two weeks, and it has been a lifesaver.
The bronchodilator was no longer necessary, but most importantly, I regained my serenity and smile. I have regained control over my life and body, and I have also discovered a newfound love for running. I have made progress if I consider that I had difficulty walking until recently and now am able to train on a daily basis. So much so that, two years ago, I completed my inaugural marathon. It would not have been feasible without identifying the appropriate therapy.
