I’m beginning a new phase in my journey with CBC Test Escort diagnosis.
Starting the Journey
In 2017, I went to donate blood. I remember watching the sample sink slowly in the Anaemia test tube; it seemed something was unusual. I was informed that I had anaemia and received a printout to bring to my doctor. About a week later, my GP explained I’d got hypothyroidism, a vitamin B12 deficiency, possible coeliac disease, iron issues and also high cholesterol. My results were odd; she wanted me to have another CBC test, electrophoresis, “although she was sure I’d hear nothing more about this”. I searched the internet to see what such an anaemia disease was for and found it was looking for markers of cancer I’d never heard of: multiple myeloma.
Multiple myeloma is an incurable cancer with a prognosis of just a few years. Despite this, I actually felt fine. I had been a bit tired, and caring for my elderly parents with dementia was stressful, but I didn’t feel sick. When the GP surgery called two days later and asked me to come in on a Friday afternoon, I knew what was coming. I had read enough to ask the GP specific questions about my results, and I realized there was only a small chance I didn’t have active myeloma.
I asked my GP about life expectancy since I felt so well.
He told me he had known people who went from feeling fine to passing away in three months. Looking back, I think he meant that life is uncertain, but at the time, I took it to mean I might only have three months left. My husband was away that weekend, and I was in shock, trying to figure out what I needed to do in what I thought might be my last three months.
Treatment and Recovery A CBC Haematolog:
I saw it within a few days. I had several scans, a bone marrow biopsy, and other tests. My official diagnosis came six weeks later. I was ready to hear that I had multiple myeloma, but even if I hadn’t been, the concern and care from the nursing staff before my consultation would have prepared me. The only surprise was when the consultant said, “I’m sorry, I can’t prescribe lenalidomide.” At that point, I had never heard of it. I must have seemed well-informed, which led me to research myeloma treatments further. I eventually needed a second opinion from someone who could prescribe lenalidomide, though I had to co-pay for it.r, I am feeling just as well as I did before diagnosis. I’ve had 5 rounds of triple therapy and surgery to remove a thyroid tumour.
Myeloma affects everyone differently. In my case, it’s unusual because I don’t have any known bone lesions and haven’t had infections so far. Still, I’m not taking any chances. Like many others, I’m staying protected and trying to avoid the pandemic.
PetraDiscovery and Early Management
About 13 years ago, when I was living in another part of the country, I had a CBC medical exam for a new job. During the routine tests, they found I had a low white blood cell count. Looking back, this made sense because I had been dealing with frequent infections for some time. My GP was great and checked on things every couple of months. When things didn’t improve, I was referred to the haematology department. They did several tests (except a bone marrow transplant) and decided it was idiopathic neutropenia, so my GP continued to manage it.
In 2014, I was hospitalised with a severe respiratory infection, which was likely made worse by the neutropenia.
Diagnosis and Treatment
In early 2015, we moved back home, and my new GP was
proactive in monitoring my CBC counts and prescribing antibiotics if I get infections. When my counts still didn’t improve after a couple of years, she referred me to the local haematology department. Their approach was very different and included all the standard tests. I also had a bone marrow biopsy at the end of 2017.
They also started me on a filtration regimen to boost my white blood cell count. The biopsy results showed that while the number of blasts was still low, the cytogenetic test found I had an extra chromosome 8, or trisomy 8, as my consultant called it. I was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome, which isn’t very common for someone my age (54). I was told I was in a lower-risk category, with a median survival of 10 years.
Obstacles and Difficulties
My High level consultant was excellent and took the time to explain everything about my condition and what to expect in the long term. With my scientific background, I could understand most of it and ask relevant questions. Unfortunately, within a week of my diagnosis, I caught the H3N1 flu virus, which turned into sepsis. I spent almost three weeks in the hospital. This experience shook my confidence, and since then, I’ve struggled with fatigue, which could be due to MDS or post-sepsis syndrome.
Adjustments and Lifestyle Changes
My employers were very supportive 24/7 and gave me access to anaemia support and counselling, which helped me come to terms with my diagnosis. My escort colleagues were also supportive in many ways. Most importantly, I have a wonderful family, and we always support each other. I continue with filgrastim and see my CBC consultant every 12 weeks.
Our local CBC haematology unit is excellent, with great expertise, communication, and compassion. Since my diagnosis, I’ve had to change how I live. I still work, but I had to step down as Head of the Department, which has greatly reduced my travel.
Like many others here, fatigue is a big challenge for me. But I have strategies that keep evolving to help manage it. I also ensure to spend time doing things I enjoy. I’m starting to feel more optimistic again about being in the upper quartile for long-term prognosis. Overall, I have a lot to be grateful for.
All the best,
Petra
